HELSINKI, Finland—Dec. 5,2013--The latest edition of Nextalk, our European customer and partner newsletter, can now be read on this website. In this edition, we highlight the "breaking news" of a poster from the Department of Neurosurgery, Technische Universität München, Germany (TUM)which has been accepted for the coming 5th International Symposium on Navigated Brain Stimulation in Neurosurgery. Using data from the first 100 patients mapped by NBS at TUM, the poster describes the results of a large study proving that the addition of NBS mapping to the prior standard pre-operative planning workup improves outcomes for patients with rolandic rain tumors. Importantly, this study corroborates similar findings from an earlier, but smaller, study made at the Department of Neurosurgery, Charité University Hospital, Berlin and published recently in the journal "Acta Neurochirurgica".

Clinicians at the Helsinki University Hospital kindly gave their permission to include images from a patient study on the use of NBS mapping in epilepsy in this edition of NexTalk. A special workshop on NBS mapping in epilepsy was recently held in Finland. The workshop reported on the successful use of the NBS System for speech mapping also in young candidates for epilepsy surgery. 

The therapeutic use of navigated rTMS in facilitating recovery from stroke is gaining more attention, as reported in the last edition of NexTalk. One of the world´s leading users of Nexstim´s navigated technologies as an adjunct to physiotherapy in stroke rehabilitation is the Clinical Institute of the Brain, in Yekaterinburg, Russia . In an interview with NexTalk, the Director of the Institute, Professor Andrey Belkin tells of their experiences with navigated rTMS in stroke and shares his belief that the technology deserves to be a standard of care in the entire Ural region. In the interview, Prof. Belkin also sheds light on their research into the use of the NBS System, with its integral EMG features, to monitor the recovery of coma patients in intensive care. An abstract from their work, "Navigated Brain Stimulation in diagnosis of minimally conscious state," was recently published in the European Journal of Anaesthesiology. The work of Prof. Belkin´s team complements recent notable work by another team led by Prof. Casali at Milan. Italy, who used the NBS System with EEG monitoring to develop an index for coma recovery. This results of this latter work were recently published in the journal Science of Translational Medicine and the topic is also described in this edition of NexTalk.
